It can be said that without Sky Hi, there would be no G.E.D. Soul Records. The band, which began in April of 2002, has had well over two dozen musicians pass through its ranks over their decade-long existence. Nick DeVan and Dave Singleton, the founders of the label, both held long stints as drummers in the band and it was through Sky Hi that DeRobert “Dee” Adams honed his now legendary stage presence. Players from Sky Hi have gone on to play in many other bands, including AJ & The Jiggawatts, Magic in Threes, DeRobert & The Half-Truths, the Grips and more. They were known throughout the Southeast as an unstoppable party band that could lay down 4 hour sets of blisteringly, sweaty funk.
Held together by founding members, alto saxophonist Aaron Heffron and bassist Tim Hawkins, the band morphed from P-Funk inspired, four on the floor bangers to pseudo-jam band funk, to raw modern soul and beyond.
They released three albums, two EPs, two 45s and a live digital album. The output that was recorded at Poor Man Studios and released on G.E.D. Soul includes the album “Testify” which was made at the height of their career. After playing hundreds of shows in countless cities, they became legends in their adopted hometown of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Currently, Sky Hi is on an indefinite hiatus while members work on other projects but you can still get down to the big-brass sound that made them a natural fit to the G.E.D. roster of artists.
